This year’s Kumho Kapers Kickoff, traditionally held on Thursday night, will take place Monday night at the Heartland Park Pavilion. The Solo Cup and Driver of Eminence awards, presented last year at the SCCA National Convention, will once again be announced at the Wednesday night awards ceremony at Exhibition Hall, next to the Capital Plaza.
Those attending the Friday night awards ceremonies will receive a special parking pass at registration to use Friday at Expo Hall. A hockey game will be taking place at the Expo the same evening and the pass will be required to park for free.
New this year is the Yokohama Worker Challenge. Nominate an individual or group from the Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday workers for a job well done. Update from Chairperson, Kathy Barnes: At the 2006 TireRack Solo National Championships there were a number of areas that presented obvious areas for improvement, and those are being addressed. First big item is that SCCA and Heartland Park Topeka are working together to address the need for a good viewing area for the east course. Second item is that an agreement has been reached for SCCA to provide paddock marshal service; Phil Osborne has agreed to serve as Paddock Chief again, so we will have the benefit of his years of experience, while Phil enjoyed a year off while still getting a chance to scope out the new facilities. No doubt he'll put together a program that works even better than what we fondly remember from Forbes Field. They are also working on a redesign of traffic flow and grid areas. The first year's event went well, but it did provide some significant "learning opportunities." As has happened each time the big event has moved, we do learn some lessons, and adapt quite successfully.
